Organic growing conditions and sustainable cultivation allows the cacao trees to thrive under the rainforest canopies without the use of pesticides and fertilisers.
Cacao beans provide a rich source of antioxidants and fibre. They also contain calcium, iron and magnesium which contributes to healthy energy metabolism and muscle function. Ways to enjoy
Peel then eat as is, lightly roast and grind into coffee, or crush into a powder and add to smoothies, ice cream, muffins, muesli, super balls, nut butters, chia pudding, trail mix and baked goods as a healthier substitute for chocolate chips. The outer shells can be eaten or used to make cacao tea.
Origins of cacao beans
Cacao beans are the seeds of an Amazonian fruiting tree pod and the source of all chocolate and cocoa/cacao products. Cacao has been grown in humid tropical environments around the equator by ancient cultures such as the Mayans and Aztecs, who believed it increased energy, mental clarity, strength and virility. Highly valued for their many distinct flavour compounds, the brightly coloured seed pods hang from vines like jewels in the jungle, transforming from green, red or purple to orange or yellow as they ripen. Largely consumed by the nobility and used in ceremonies, cacao was, and still is, a valuable commodity today.
